  • Tsiattista – The Verbal
    Duels of Wit
    Long before rap battles, Cypriots perfected the art of competitive wordplay. Tsiattista are improvised lyrical duels, traditionally performed in the Cypriot Greek dialect, set to fiddle and lute. These sharp-tongued contests, known for their humor and rhythm, date back generations and are now seeing a modern revival at festivals like Kataklysmos. UNESCO recognized this as intangible cultural heritage in 2011.
  • Lazarakia – Resurrection

    On Lazarus Saturday - the day before Palm Sunday - families bake these sweet breads shaped like a figure wrapped in burial cloth, symbolizing Lazarus’s rising from the grave.
    It's a rare and intimate tradition rarely seen outside Cyprus.
  • Lefkara Lace
    The immaculate lace known as Lefkaritika - embroidered for generations in Pano Lefkara- has 650+ traditional motifs and was once taken to Milan by Leonardo da Vinci. Today, these delicate patterns are still crafted by street-side artisans, reinforcing centuries of feminine craftsmanship.
  • Olive Sunday
    ‘Smokers’ & Crosses
    Palm Sunday in Cyprus isn’t just about palms - it’s Olive Sunday. Worshippers bring olive branches to church, which stay until Ascension, then dry and are used like incense (“smoking”) to bless homes during the year. Some regions craft olive leaf crosses for wear or place branches by their doors for protection.
